  • Overview

    The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner shall provide behavioral health services in the Department of Tele-Behavioral Health Services.


    • Work as a team member with other psychiatrist(s), social worker(s), psychologist(s), and behavior science specialist(s) to coordinate patient evaluation, treatment planning, and referrals. The contract Clinical Psychiatrist (Adult) will be credentialed at KACC and privileged to practice outpatient psychiatry at several military treatment facilities (MTF) within the Military Healthcare System. Services will usually involve multidisciplinary interaction with licensed behavioral health providers at each MTF where services are provided. The range of services will equal any service an Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic provides.
    • Provide a comprehensive evaluation of patients and as appropriate their families according to the quality assurance guidelines of the Department of Tele-Health and Department of Psychiatry.
    • Complete the history of the present illness and review past histories and social work evaluations. Interview patients to obtain insight into their problems.
    • Make referrals for further diagnostic psychological or medical testing as needed.
    • Provide individual, group, family and pharmacologic therapeutic interventions as necessary.
    • Provide crisis intervention and referral for psychiatric hospitalization.
    • Provide appropriate patient assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in accordance with acceptable Standards of Care.
    • Establish treatment plans for each patient.
    • Refer for long-term residential treatment if applicable.
    • Communicate with patients, patients' families and others to obtain personal and social information pertinent to the development of adjustment difficulty and to ascertain probable impact on the individual, unit, and community.
    • Prepare and maintain documentation, records and reports in accordance with MTF rules and regulations.
    • Provide in-service training to MTF staff during his/her regular scheduled hours. In-service training is informal training to or by staff members to update treatment procedures. Preparation is at the discretion of the provider.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    • Advance Practiced Registered Nurses (APRNs) must be graduates of an accredited master's level or doctoral program acceptable to DA that prepares RNs with additional knowledge and skills to practice in their clinical specialty.
    • APRNs will maintain a current, active, valid, unrestricted RN license in at least one U.S. State, District of Columbia, Commonwealth, territory, or jurisdiction.
    • APRNs will achieve certification by a nationally recognized certifying body appropriate to the specialty area of practice. Certification will be maintained for the duration of the individual's advanced clinical practice.
    • Minimum of one (1) year experience as a practicing PNP. This requirement may be waived for graduates of Army PNP Programs. The HCPs shall have clinical experience diagnosing and treating primary care conditions and knowledge of PTSD and related conditions.
    • Must possess a controlled substances registration certificate from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) 1AW the laws of the state in which he/she is licensed.
    • Shall have graduated from a Nurse Practitioner Course to effectively provide behavioral health services for patients and family members.
    • Ability to respond to cardiopulmonary arrests as appropriate and to arrange for clinical backup; must have and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
    • Must provide Prime Source Verification.
    • Demonstrated computer proficiency with MS Office; strong MS Word and Excel Skills required. Basic computer knowledge of software, program functions and user interface.
    • Ability to navigate and record data with clinical software.
    • Ability to work in a self-directed, fast paced, results oriented environment.
    • Ability to multi-task and be detailed oriented.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Maintain CE credit sufficient to maintain both clinical license and/or certification, and to meet standards for credentialing and privileging.
    • Competent to treat adults for crisis intervention and ongoing psychotherapy/medical management and able to effectively provide psychiatric healthcare services.
    • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision, and have strong organization skills.




    Physical Demands

    Frequent sitting, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing and seeing up close, at a distance, along the periphery, with depth perception and the ability to adjust focus; occasional walking or standing, occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs.     Work Environment

    Work is performed in a professional office setting including the normal office equipment (computer, fax machines, copier) and with a wide variety of people in differing functions, personalities and abilities.

    Work Schedule

    40 hours per week.  May be required to work additional hours as needed to complete assignment or project.  May require flexible work schedule.
