  • Overview

    Provides support to attorneys. Under the direction of an attorney, resolves routine legal issues. Researches and analyzes law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treaties, constitutions, and legal codes to prepare legal documents, such as briefs, pleadings, appeals, contracts, etc. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

    Responsibilities

    • Support the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) Section under the program and technical guidance of the OCDETF Chief.
    • Meets with case agents to formulate an indexing scheme for organizing data and information obtained and compiled during the investigation.
    • Maintains continued communication with law enforcement regarding types of discovery produced during the investigation.
    • Prepares all aspects of the case pre-indictment through the completion (i.e., prepare document discovery methodology and spreadsheets; organizes discovery motions and other preliminary responses; analyzing documents for separation by type of document and labeling methodology; assists in electronic searches in the databases of affected agencies; production of documents for inclusion as exhibits and addenda to motions; and preliminary analysis of motions to determine whether motion is evidentiary or foundational in nature).
    • Prepare for initial litigation hearings, including creating indictment history and detention files relating to each charged co-defendant.
    • Preparing witness books, submissions to court for exhibit lists and witness lists, and exhibits to be utilized at trial and hearing, and synchronization of exhibits with Sanction for exhibition in the courtroom.
    • Accompanying trial attorneys to courtroom for handling and management of documents and electronic software, including but not limited to Sanction, I Pro, Word Perfect and projection monitor, and for analysis and production of records, data and documents relating to the issues presented by the daily litigation.
    • Compiling sealed documents and organizing them into a sentencing work plan using Excel.
    • Preparing, researching, and analyzing post-conviction claims for relief.
    • Will assist in training of attorneys and staff as to electronic discovery and organization methodology in litigation as directed by the management of the OCDETF Unit. 
    • Assists with various other assignments as needed.

    Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline. In lieu of degree, relevant work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.
    • 2 to 4 years of relevant experience required.
    • General knowledge of office procedures and standard support processes.
    • Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures.
    • Experience using Microsoft Office 7 (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) Adobe and other media type software.

    SPECIAL SKILLS

    • Requires sound judgment, tact, discretion and initiative. 
    • Wide degree of creativity and latitude is required. 
    • Must have keen organizational skills, adaptable communications skills, and patience in the face of difficult and demanding personalities.
    • Must have the capability to search I Prop and document findings through Excel.
    • Confidential data and information management experience required. 
    • Strong familiarity with government regulations and directives pertaining to security, confidentiality, and document retention.

    Physical Demands

    Position consists of sitting for long periods of time, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing and seeing up close, at a distance, along the periphery, with depth perception and the ability to focus; occasional walking or standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and lifting boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. Moderate to extended periods of office work with heavy periods of computer usage. May be assigned occasional to moderate periods of analytical tasks requiring extensive reasoning abilities.     Work Environment

    Work is primarily performed in a professional office setting, including the normal office equipment (e.g., computer, fax machines, copier) and with a wide variety of people in differing functions, personalities and abilities.

    Work Schedule

    24 hours per week.  May be required to work additional hours as needed to complete assignment or project.
